Covering an Evolving Mormonism: A Journalist’s Barometer of Prophets, Problems, and Progress
Peggy Fletcher Stack, The Salt Lake Tribune
Abstract. In 1993, apostle Boyd K. Packer identified feminism, LGBTQ issues, and “so-called intellectuals” as the three greatest threats to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Award-winning reporter Peggy Fletcher Stack, who has covered the church and other religions for The Salt Lake Tribune since 1991, notes that these three issues are some of the most contentious she has covered in her career, taking up a large percentage of the more than 5,000 news stories she has written over more than thirty years. This article is adapted from the 2023 Glenn Vernon lecture she gave at the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah.
